Introduction - Bedgebury Pinetum
The residency at Bedgebury Pinetum fell to Rye based poet, Sarah Wardle, winner of Poetry Review's New Poet of the Year Award in 1999. With over 6000 remarkable trees to wax lyrical about, this is the largest collection of conifers in Europe and includes examples of the world's tallest, oldest and rarest, set amongst landscaped valleys and lakes. Established in 1924, the Pinetum has been run solely by the Forestry Commission since 1965. Its new Heritage Lottery funded Education and Visitor Centre, currently being designed by Niall Phillips Architects (using the microscopic organic form of the conifer as a subtle design element) is due to open in Spring 2004.
